More on Spotify Payments

hypebot.com

Clear thinking here, in this great article posted to hypebot.com by David Macias, of Nashville-based Thirty Tigers… he addresses recent misinformation and assumptions being perpetuated about Spotify royalty payouts and fairness in the evolving digital music landscape.  Understanding digital revenue streams is hard enough, without the added confusion of factually incorrect social media posts being widely shared and re-tweeted:

“Saying incendiary things that aren’t based in fact is damaging. The music industry stuck their heads in the sand about the pros and cons related to the digitization of music in the 1990s, conducted their affairs in an atmosphere of fear and lack of understanding, and many bad decisions resulted. The power in the music industry is now shifting from labels to artists and managers. Now that we have more control, let’s be careful not to make similar mistakes because we’re approaching the discussion from that same vantage point of misinformation and fear.”

New Neil Finn Website

Neil Finn | Official website
Neil Finn | Official website

Neil Finn has launched a comprehensive new website (yes!), “which has been a long time coming” in his words, and which also coincides with the release of his new “Song of the Lonely Mountain,” which plays over the end credits of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (link below). The site looks like a real treat for fans of all things Finn such as myself, with music, video, and beautiful photography from each phase of his career. The EPK videos from The Finn Brothers’ “Everyone Is Here” (one of my favorite albums) are included, as well as a 2010 interview I’d never seen… and pages and pages of Crowded House video and interviews.

Timbre Live Music Discovery App

Timbre Music Discovery App
Timbre Music Discovery App

I am loving Intrepid Pursuits’ Timbre live music discovery app for iOS. It’s a really simple and intuitive tool for quickly looking up what shows are happening in your area tonight or in the coming week, and quickly hearing what the artists sound like. Music previews, if available, are pulled from the iTunes store and play immediately. Intrepid Pursuits’ founder Mark Kasdorf says “We want to be a service that lets you listen to a lot of music quickly. We don’t want you to not find any jazz, or any country, because you think you don’t like it…” and The New York Times calls it “radically simple…”

An Android version is expected by year’s end.

Bandcamp Kills It With New Web-Optimized Mobile Pages | Billboard.biz

Billboard.biz | Music Industry
Billboard.biz | Music Industry

Nice to see I’m not the only one who gets excited by the continuing awesomeness that is the Bandcamp publishing platform… as I blogged about, 3 weeks ago, their new mobile-optimized pages really knock it out of the park (like everything else they do), and folks are taking notice:

“Bandcamp has absolutely killed it with its new mobile-optimized web pages. Life just got a lot more difficult for MTV, which last week put Artist.MTV pages into public beta and will give it a mobile push later this year. MySpace might as well give up…”—Billboard
