Apple now offers optional two-step verification for Apple ID, the key to an Apple account, which controls iOS devices, iCloud, iTunes and Apple Support. Google already has two-step verification, and this feature goes a long way toward making online accounts stronger in the current “threat landscape,” as security experts say. With the new Apple feature turned on, both a password and a four-digit verification code sent to an iOS device will be required to allow sign-in. All cloud storage services should follow suit. CD Baby just lowered its commission on MP3 sales from 25% to 9%, making it the lowest of any of the digital retailers, including Bandcamp, which powers the store on this site. And the new rate also applies to sales that come through any of their direct-to-fan sales modules, like the MusicStore for Facebook. CD Baby has probably the most complete set of artist tools of any of the independent music distribution services, and they just keep getting better and better, even since founder Derek Sivers left in 2008. It’s hard not to like this company…

Need quick last minute gift ideas? iTunes Store lets you gift digital music by printing out a personalized gift certificate of your purchase right from your own computer, to give in person, as well as the option to immediately send the gift certificate by email… all Mike Shupp digital albums are available in the iTunes Store here.

I am loving Intrepid Pursuits’ Timbre live music discovery app for iOS. It’s a really simple and intuitive tool for quickly looking up what shows are happening in your area tonight or in the coming week, and quickly hearing what the artists sound like. Music previews, if available, are pulled from the iTunes store and play immediately. Intrepid Pursuits’ founder Mark Kasdorf says “We want to be a service that lets you listen to a lot of music quickly. We don’t want you to not find any jazz, or any country, because you think you don’t like it…” and The New York Times calls it “radically simple…”
An Android version is expected by year’s end.

I’m finally closing in on 5,000 songs in my iTunes Music Library… certainly not as many as some, but a cool milestone nonetheless. And I’m loving using iTunes Match and iCloud…
“How iTunes Match works: iTunes determines which songs in your collection are available in the iTunes Store. Any music with a match is automatically added to iCloud for you to listen to anytime, on any device. Since there are more than 20 million songs in the iTunes Store, chances are your music is already in iCloud. And for the few songs that aren’t, iTunes uploads what it can’t match (which is much faster than uploading your entire music library). Even better, all the music iTunes matches plays back from iCloud at 256-Kbps AAC DRM-free quality — even if your original copy was of lower quality.”

Wow, what is this all about…?
Amazon Beats Google to Cloud Music Service – PCWorld
“Amazon Cloud Drive is a “personal disk drive in the cloud,” while Amazon Cloud Player is… a Web-based music player… Amazon Cloud Drive will be something like Google’s rumored digital music locker, a cloud-based storage system for all of your tunes.”
